God Promises Comfort – Matthew 5:4

God Promises Comfort

God Promises Comfort

The Bible contains a number of promises that comfort us. These promises are made to those who trust in Jesus, the Lord of all comfort.

Whether you’re struggling with illness, grief or strained relationships, God’s Word can be a powerful source of comfort for you in these times. This is the kind of comfort that’s not only based on our circumstances, but on the character and work of Christ in our lives.

Psalm 34:18 (NIV) tells us that the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. This is a promise that God will be with you in your darkest moments, and He will bring you through them.

Matthew 5:4 (NIV) says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” This is a promise that God will provide you with a place in His Kingdom if you have a poor, contrite heart.

In the OT, this was said to those who had been redeemed from Egypt bondage, but it applies to all believers. The word poor in spirit refers to those who recognize their spiritual dependency on God, and those who are living in a spiritual state of poverty (see Isa 61:1, Zep 2:3).

Many Christians, especially those who have suffered loss, are under the misguided myth that they should never cry, because it shows a lack of faith in God’s sovereignty. This is false and does not reflect the Scriptures. It’s also dangerous, because it can lead to depression and a general sense of worthlessness.
