Power Source – Acts 1:8

This verse in the Book of Acts is often overlooked, but it is one of the key texts that define the book. It is the key that unlocks the door to all of the events in the Book.

Jesus commissioned His disciples to be his witnesses, and the Lord promised them that they would receive power (Dunamis) for that purpose when He poured out the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The apostles were empowered to spread the Gospel message in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.

A misunderstanding of the text: It is sometimes thought that this verse refers to “visible” manifestations of power, such as signs and wonders. But the context of the verse clearly indicates that believers will receive power to be witnesses, not to see or hear God’s power, but to speak the Word of God with boldness.

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and His apostles were empowered to perform miracles, as well. In a similar way, when the Holy Spirit came upon Paul, he was able to speak with the tongue of angels and preach the gospel with supernatural power. The Holy Spirit also filled all of the early church, and empowered them to speak with tongues as well. In addition, the Spirit gave them spiritual gifts of wisdom and understanding, healing, and so forth. These gifts were used to carry the gospel message to all nations.
