Give Thanks to the Lord For He is Good – Psalm 107:1
The psalm begins with praise of God for His steadfast love, which is often translated as “lovingkindness.” This term is used over 250 times in the Old Testament. The psalm is a beautiful reminder of how much God loves His people.
Israel understood that the Lord had a special, covenant relationship with them. This relationship would never end.
They knew that He was the One who would hear their prayers, rescue them from their sins and trials, and guide them to victory.
It is a common theme throughout the Bible to encourage people to give thanks to the Lord for their salvation. In fact, many of the prophets in the Old Testament cried out in thanksgiving for God protecting or rescuing His people.
This psalm is also unique in that it lists specific types of people that the Lord redeemed from sin. While this is not typical of a Davidic psalm, it does indicate that it may have been written as a call to action and that it had a personal meaning for the psalmist.
The psalmist is reminding the reader that God does not just redeem people from sin, but He does so to transform them into good people. He does this through His Word, by transforming their lives and helping them become like Him.
He does this by filling the hungry soul with goodness, by supplying them with things they need to live and grow, and through His Word. It is a wonderful thing to see how the Lord meets the needs of His people, gives them strength and happiness, and makes them feel His presence in their lives.
