Today’s SuperVerse is Romans 8:28 – When You’re Puzzled…
God Works For the Good of Those Who Love Him – Romans 8:28
Romans 8:28 tells us that God works for the good of those who love him. This is a comforting and encouraging promise to anyone who has been hurt by sin or lost in the world. However, this verse can also be misapplied and even misused by Christians.
What is the real meaning of this verse?
The word “love” here means “to be in harmony with the will of God.” It is a synonym for the Greek word phronomia which translates to “purpose,” and it refers to the purpose that God has in mind in saving the Christian.
This means that He has a plan for the salvation of all people and that He is working out his plans to bring about that purpose in the lives of those who follow Him.
God works to conform believers into the image of Christ, with the intent that many would rule with him as joint heirs (Romans 8:29). The principle of “judgment and salvation” is central to this teaching.
The promises in this passage to believers are that they will be foreknown, predestined, called, justified, and glorified. The first four have already happened; glorification is still future.
