Remember the Sabbath – Exodus 20:8
God’s fourth commandment to Israel (and one of the ten) is to “remember the Sabbath” and to “keep it holy.” This command is not merely a reminder to think about the seventh day but to do something about it.
It is to be a time of rest from work, a day to remember what matters most in life and a day to make space for that rest by reconnecting with the Creator.
The Bible tells us that we must keep this day as a holy day in order to experience the full blessings of God and His promises. It is a time to worship, a time to study, a time to care for ourselves and others, and a time to strengthen our spirits in the presence of God.
But how do we remember the Sabbath?
In the Old Testament, the Israelites often found it difficult to remember to remember. This is why they needed the special observance of the Sabbath.
This was why the Israelites prayed on the Sabbath, and why the priests kept the Sabbath in the temple and sacrificed the Sabbath burnt offerings there.
During the days of Israel’s exile in Egypt, some of them were not able to keep the Sabbath because they could not gather manna during that week. This was a very gracious and positive gift from God to Israel, but it was also a problem for many of them.
