For I know that my Redeemer lives – Job 19:25

As we study this verse in the Bible, it is important to understand that Job was not speaking about a “redeemer” in the sense that Christians have used it. Rather, Job is talking about a “kinsman-redeemer” and his kinsman-redeemer is God. This is why the idea of a redeemer did not fully come into Christian theology until later, when the full revelation of Jesus Christ was made known to believers.

The kinsman-redeemer was someone who came to the aid of a person in trouble. In Job’s time, this was usually a man or woman; in later times it could be an angel, but it typically involved some form of payment.

But Job was confident that a kinsman-redeemer would come to his aid. Moreover, Job was also confident that this kinsman-redeemer would be the one to plead Job’s case against his accusers.

Job had a strong faith that he could rest on, regardless of what happened to him in his life. His faith was based on the past words and deeds of God, which had been proven to be true by other people.

This confidence in God was what allowed Job to say, “I do not know where you are; I have no idea how you are going, but my Redeemer is with me” (Job 19:27). And when we are suffering, we can say the same thing. For we know that our Redeemer will at last stand upon the earth, and in his flesh, we will see God.
