Today’s Superverse is Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
As we unravel Ephesians verse-by-verse, Paul’s teaching stands out as an indispensable source of practical, valuable wisdom. His writings share a unified focus, emphasis and vocabulary for easy reading; furthermore they demonstrate uniform doctrine regarding Mosaic Law, Jesus and faith. One of the key lessons from Ephesians is that Christians who have been saved form one family under Christ. This passage (Ephesians 4:30) offers us guidance in doing this rightly. It instructs us not to grieve the Holy Spirit. Grieve refers to an intense negative feeling triggered by being upset or wronged, so as not to bring sorrow upon Jesus Christ by our sin or any other means.
Christian believers should shun bitterness and anger as soon as they recognize them; anger refers to any feelings associated with bad temper or revenge, and should instead use their energy towards serving God and others. The Bible teaches Christians this lesson.
Christian should refrain from engaging in any forms of clamorous and demeaning speech, such as shouting. Also included under this category is gossip and slander – behaviors which harm churches by prompting people to doubt Christianity. Instead, Christians should speak words which are helpful, edifying or building up instead.
Put off these harmful behaviors and attitudes will allow Christians to grow into Christlikeness more quickly, by walking in the power of the Holy Spirit and showing love towards others through service to Him. Furthermore, doing this can make Christians stronger spiritually so they can avoid Satan’s temptations or other negative forces that attempt to tempt them.
