Satan Is Destroyed Forever – Revelation 20:7-9
In the end, God will have to destroy Satan and his fallen angels. That will happen at the end of a 1000 year millennium, when Jesus rules in the kingdom. He will bring a reign of righteousness, love and peace to earth (compare Isa. 2:3-4; 11:3-5; 35:1-2).
During the first 1,000 years, Christ will reign on the earth and rule with unopposed sovereignty, while Satan and his fallen angels are kept captive in the bottomless pit, waiting to be sent into the lake of fire. They are punished for their rebellion against God in the Great Tribulation.
When the Lord Jesus returns, he will defeat Satan and his fallen angels in a battle we call Armageddon (compare Revelation 16:6-9). After a short time, this mighty angel will be loosed for a season, and then sent into a millennial prison to keep him from infecting the unredeemed who remain on earth after the Great Tribulation.
At that time, those who survive the Tribulation and enter the kingdom will be believers, but they will have a sinful human nature, just like their ancestors did. They will have to face one final judgment in which they are brought into the presence of Christ, and the wrath of God is applied to their sins. They will be tormented day and night, but it won’t be long until they are destroyed for good. This will be the last attempt by man to rebel against God’s authority and be freed from His power.
