Today’s SuperVerse is Psalm 16:11 – You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
The Joy of God’s Presence – Psalm 16:11
David, the king of Israel, is exulting in the presence of his God. He does not fear death because he believes that his God will protect him and sustain him, and because he will always be with him. He rejects all other gods and those who worship them. He has found that the things of this world are not satisfying and do not satisfy him; his only pleasure is in God, his sovereign Lord and trusted counselor.
This is not a simple and easy thing to believe, especially in the face of all that we see and experience around us. It requires an inner change and a total surrender of our will to God’s will for us, as well as trusting Him in the hard things that happen in our lives.
The fulness of joy – This is not an ordinary type of joy, but a complete and perfect joy. It is not intermingled with any pain or sorrow. It is full and satisfying, unclouded and bright; it is not diminished by the feeling that it must soon come to an end, like most earthly pleasures.
At thy right hand are pleasures forever – This is not a mere reference to the present life, but to the eternal state of happiness and honor which awaits believers. It is a promise that those who place their hope in Christ’s resurrection will be raised to live with God in the presence of his heavenly kingdom, where we will share in the glory and the blessing of Jesus Christ.
