Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Phillipians 4:13, which proclaims, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” has garnered significant attention in Christian history. But what exactly does it mean? Interpretations can take various forms: personal achievements as Paul’s claim or struggles through life as evidence that Christ gives strength for any endeavor; or it could mean strength to overcome whatever comes our way – but neither interpretation accurately conveys what Scripture implies.

Paul wrote the letter below as part of a letter he sent to Philippi, the first church he established in Europe. Paul intended for it to encourage them not to lose focus on God’s plan for their lives and become complacent; to show this point he shared some of his struggles throughout his life; in doing so he demonstrated how Christ is enough for all. Whether hungry, well-fed, free or imprisoned Paul found contentment through Him alone despite these circumstances.

Paul wrote this passage while imprisoned under Roman law and chained to an ankle monitor. Rather than understanding suffering academically, Paul knew what it was like to go hungry or without clothing or food; therefore he wanted his friends to know he could still find joy, happiness and contentment even during such trying times.

As he wrote the letter, the Philippian church sent a gift to assist with his financial needs while in prison. To show their generosity, he mentioned it in his letter; not in order to brag, but simply express his thanks. However, it should be remembered that this letter was intended to reach an inmate, so his circumstances probably did not facilitate true happiness and contentment.

Paul was able to write this letter and share his experience with the church in Philippi due to the strength he found in Christ. We too can tap into this strength if we turn toward Him with faith and trust Him with everything in life, thereby finding peace and joy even during difficult circumstances.

Reading Scripture as a whole, rather than choosing individual passages or verses from chapters, will enable us to fully appreciate its message and purpose. We hope that this article has provided you with some tools for finding strength within yourself in whatever situation comes your way.
