Living in accordance with God’s name
Exodus 20:7 ESV “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
The Bible talks about two kinds of sin: intentional and defiant. Intentional sin is the one where a person intentionally breaks the law. In the Bible, this would be blasphemy against God. The death penalty would be applicable in such cases. This is a terrible sin that dishonors God. It also dishonors humankind. Therefore, living in accordance with God’s name honors God.
To fully honor God, we must know and use His name. The Hebrew meanings behind the three words are incredibly powerful. We should treat God as the sovereign, mighty One He is, and not as an old man. By doing this, we are honoring Him by fully obeying the Third Commandment. Hopefully, this will encourage us to live a life that honors Him and His name.
Living in accordance with God’s will
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Living in accordance with God’s will means choosing what pleases Him and what pleases others. While the Bible contains many specific commands, it does not record everything in every situation. Understanding God’s character helps you seek His will and obey Him, no matter what the situation may be. While disobedience can derail God’s purpose, it will not lead to your destruction. Therefore, living in accordance with His will honors God and others.
The Scriptures make it clear that living in accordance with God’s will honor Him. We know His revealed will by studying them and submitting to it. Living in accordance with God’s will honors God because we are doing what He has commanded. We are free to do good things or bad, but we should not abuse our freedom for evil. Our freedom is not ours to misuse, so we should live as if it were given to us. However, when we fail to follow God’s will, we fail to honor Him.
Living in accordance with God’s word
Hebrews 4:12Â ESV For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
If you claim to be a Christian, then you are obligated to live according to God’s Word. Those who fail to live by the Word of God bring even greater reproach to the name of God. It is even more dangerous if you’re a minister of the gospel who disobeys God’s commandments. Consequently, you might not want to pursue Bible study if you don’t think you’re living as a Christian.
Likewise, those who serve under a yoke should honor their masters with all honor. By honoring your parents, you will have a long life and flourish in the land of God. Remember, that your parents were the temple of the Holy Spirit, so do whatever you can to honor them. In the land of God, they served the most important role in your life. As such, they deserve all honor.
Avoiding idolatry
Leviticus 19:1-37Â ESV
The first principle Paul outlined for Christians was to make choices for God’s glory and not our own. While all human behavior is permissible, the chief end of human existence is the glory of God, so we must make our choices carefully and honor God above all. For this reason, Paul outlined two criteria for eating with non-believers: the good and the beneficial.
The second principle Paul outlined is that we should avoid making idols out of our lives. This is because idols are a temptation that comes with every healthy choice we make. Paul did not specifically say not to eat or drink the meat offered to idols, but rather, that we should take idolatry seriously. The word “cravers” simply means “evil.”
Limiting engagement with idolatry
1 John 5:21Â ESV Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
The apostle Paul teaches us to limit our engagement with idolatry to things that honor God. One example is the use of animal sacrifices. Paul writes that partakers of the animal sacrifices become identified with the idol worshipers and should not eat the animal sacrifices. In doing so, we honor God and honor the will of God. But how can we limit our engagement with idolatry?
This passage is a good illustration of our time. While we are naturally able to resist the temptation to eat animal sacrifices, we should also avoid becoming despondent or envious. Paul also shows the danger of idol worship by illustrating how many others had fallen into it. While this is not the case today, it is still good to avoid the temptations and keep ourselves and others safe.
