Today’s Super Verse is Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Psalm 23 is one of the most quoted and memorized Scripture passages. The psalm describes God as a good shepherd. He protects, feeds, and leads his people on paths of righteousness.
In Bible times, shepherds faced incredibly dangerous situations. They risked their lives to protect their flock. Shepherds also had to fight off wild animals that could harm or kill their sheep.
This psalm focuses on David’s confidence in the Lord as his Shepherd. As an older man, David was familiar with the unchanging nature of God. His confidence in the Lord was a source of strength. Whenever he was in trouble, he remembered that God was his shepherd.
Shepherds bring their sheep to places where they can spread out and graze. Often, shepherds use rods and staff to guide their flock. These symbols represent the care and guidance that God gives his people.
A shepherd must be willing to lay down his life for his flock. Without this willingness, his sheep would not survive. Likewise, when God’s people become lost, they cannot walk alone. It is for this reason that believers need to be confident in their Shepherd.
The image of a shepherd in Psalm 23 is one that connects us to Jesus. We should consider ourselves to be sheep in the eyes of our Shepherd.
