Psalm 127:3 – The Builder’s Psalm

Psalm 127:3Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.

Psalm 127:3 – The Builder’s Psalm

In this psalm Solomon draws upon two parallel images: the building of a house and the guarding of a city. He teaches us to acknowledge our dependence on God in all our daily activities, and to trust that He will meet our needs.

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain; and unless the Lord keeps the city, the keeper watches in vain.

The work of the house and of the city is fruitless without the blessings of God; so too does the labour of the son.

The idea of the psalm is to draw men away from excessive care and anxiety in their work, and to excite godliness and faith in the Lord. It is an application of the principle exhibited in the Psalms 111 and 115, that every man labours in vain without the help of the Lord.
