5 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath overcome the world, even our faith. 5 And who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not [a]with the water only, but [b]with the water and [c]with the blood. 7 And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 8 For there are three who bear witness, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and the three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for the witness of God is this, that he hath borne witness concerning his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in him: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he hath not believed in the witness that God hath borne concerning his Son. 11 And the witness is this, that God gave unto us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.
Faith that overcomes the world – 1 John 5:1-12
The Bible defines faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). In this passage it is used to describe the Christian’s victory over evil.
Faith – the Key to Victory
When we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, our lives become changed. In this new life we have a relationship with the Father through Jesus and are filled with the Holy Spirit who helps us to live a Christian life, and our spiritual gifts and abilities are empowered by the power of God.
This new life empowers the believer to conquer the world, and that is why this verse says that everyone who believes in Christ is an overcomer!
Our lives can be filled with a great abundance of God’s love, peace, joy, and hope. It is because of our relationship with the Son of God that we can live in a realm of God’s possibility, where men walk on water, dead bodies rise, tyrants are defeated, barren lands are filled with fruit, and deliverance is routinely provided.
Faith – the Key to Overcoming This World
The world is full of temptations, pressures, and problems. We need faith to overcome these things, because if we do not have faith then we cannot please God. But we need more than just intellectual agreement with the truths of our faith; we must also live a life of abiding faith and trust in Jesus.
